"The soul’s bird from Wright's poem flies in, singing on a branch about to break, listening with tears, melting the locked seal. A song never heard before rises from the heart, singing of love for a secret garden, of despair in the silent abyss, and the shadow of the sky. In the name of love, it sings to the last moment." — "The Song of THE SILENT THRUSH"
Through the light source of their mobile phones and varying perspectives, viewers experience shifts between light and shadow within the work. This black box space not only symbolizes the front and backstage of a theatrical stage but also invites viewers to become part of the artwork, diving deeply into the fusion of inner emotions and social reality.
"The Song of THE SILENT THRUSH " ink installation is inspired by the text from Ling Yan's novel "The Silent Thrush." It portrays the drifting, tender love of a fading Taiwanese opera troupe, unfolding on and off stage. Long interested in the theme of memory in the digital age, this piece merges text, a long ink scroll, and stage design to simulate multiple perspectives of private emotions, mirroring how social media provides glimpses into intimate worlds. It explores the boundary between the virtual and real, online and offline, allowing viewers to experience the profound depths of the emotional realm and fostering empathy that embraces diversity.
The layout follows the symbolic movements of "Entry as an Official" and "Exit as a Minister." "Entry as an Official" signifies entering the inner spiritual world, engaging in introspection and dialogue with oneself, while "Exit as a Minister" represents returning to the external, facing and choosing to engage in dialogue with society. The ink scroll trilogy reveals partial views under different light sources, intentionally obscuring the full picture to provoke the viewer's imagination of the whole. Gradually, the entire scene unfolds as they move through different phases, culminating in a final revelation of truth. The piece functions as a dynamic exhibition mechanism.
The most captivating aspect of this installation art is the viewer’s expression of wonder. Viewers can "step into" the work, becoming a part of it, and upon "stepping out," they emerge as changed individuals.
This ink installation is a gift to the world, created with the full devotion of life. Please enjoy.
"Seeing precedes words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak." — John Berger, Ways of Seeing
Do you know how people used to view a handscroll? Holding it in both hands, they would unfurl a section, gradually winding it back with the right hand while expanding it with the left. This browsing, overlapping, and moving viewpoint is known as scattered perspective, offering endlessly varied angles of viewing.
The Song of THE SILENT THRUSH ink scroll trilogy, from its subtle monochrome beginnings to its vibrant, epic structure, uses original flowing lines, radiating patterns, industrial networks, and calligraphic strokes to portray intimate images of the inner soul.
